| Essentially a dance drama, Kathakali is staged by mostly male artistes. The essence of the story is depicted by facial expressions and hand-gestures (mudras), while the background singers impart the dialogue. The face of the Kathakali artiste, painted to go well with the character being portrayed, is often mistaken for a mask. | |
| There are many Kathakali centres in Cochin. The painting of the Kathakali face can be seen at most centres if you visit the centre atleast 1-2 hours before the show. |

| The martial art form of Kerala, Kalaripayattu is thought to be the forerunner of the more recognized Karate and Kungfu. Historic evidence substantiates the practice of Kalaripayattu as far back as the 12th century AD. A branch of medicine, Kalarichikitsa, which deals mainly with the cure of injuries and sprains, was developed as an offshoot of Kalaripayattu. |
