Named
after Lord Willingdon, the British Viceroy of India, Willingdon Island
is an artificial island of over 1000 acres, created from what was
dredged while deepening the Cochin port. Located between Ernakulam and
Mattancherry, this island is the hub of all shipping, import and export
activities. The Venduruthy Bridge connects Willingdon Island to
Ernakulam. And the Mattancherry Bridge connects Willingdon Island
to Mattancherry. Many
important buildings like the Government of India Tourist Office, the
Southern Naval Command Headquarters, the Cochin Port Trust, the Navy
Airport, Customs House and the Merchant Navy Club are situated in this island, besides the
Southern Railways Harbour Terminus railway station and some of the
city’s best star hotels like the Taj Malabar, Oberoi Trident and the
Casino.
Numerous major trading and industrial houses and the Cochin Chamber of
Commerce & Industry can also be found here. Willingdon Island is
under the administrative control of the Cochin Port Trust.
