The KTDC (Kerala Tourism Development Corporation) organizes city sight-seeing tours by motor boat. There are two trips daily, from 9 am to 12.30 pm and from 2 pm to 5.30 pm. The tours start from the Sealord jetty and cover the Dutch Palace, Jewish Synagogue, Chinese Fishing Nets, St. Francis Church and the Bolgatty Palace. Rates are Rs 50 per head. The KTDC also has on offer another backwater trip called the sunset tour, from about 5.30 pm to 7.00 pm. Enquiries can be made at the KTDC Tourist Reception (ph: 91-484-353234).
Private boat operators also offer equally good sight-seeing trips from the Sealord jetty. Though these boats do not have any scheduled trips, one can expect to rent a boat anytime for a price of around Rs 250 per hour.

Kettuvallams are large, traditional house boats of over 60 feet in length. Originally, rice boats were used to haul rice and other commodities. Even today, they are used to some extent. It is this rice boat that has been redesigned and converted into luxurious accommodation units for tourists. A 24-hour trip costs somewhere in the region of Rs 6000. Cheaper ones costing less, but with fewer facilities, are also available.

Tourist Bureau (ph:91-484-222671), Clipper Holidays (ph:91-484-364453), Heritage Tours (ph:91-484-363386), Intersight (ph:91-484-313396) offer house boat tours.

village backwater cruises

Village backwater cruises are another popular tour made available by the KTDC. These trips, which include visits to villages and coconut plantations, are arranged on country boats and usually take around 3-4 hours. It is one of the best possible ways to observe the tranquil village life at close range. The rates are around Rs 300 for a trip.
Other than the KTDC, the Tourist Bureau (ph: 91-484-222671) in Fort-Kochi and Visit India (ph: 91-484-668819) in Willingdon Island  also offer similar trips at about the same price.
